YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE THE NEXT BIG THING WILL COME FROM
“Guardians of the Galaxy” was the second-biggest movie of 2014, a massive hit that raked in three quarters of a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Superhero films often do big business but they are far from a sure thing, especially when the characters aren’t well-known outside of comic book circles. So who would have thought that Chris Pratt, a relatively unknown actor from a little-watched sitcom, would break out and become one of the biggest movie stars in the world?
Not his director, that’s who.
SOMETIMES YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
James Gunn, director and co-writer of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” has said that he didn’t even want to see Pratt for the part of Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord. “I thought it was insane to cast the fat guy from ‘Parks and Rec’ as the lead,” he told GQ last year. But since 80 to 100 actors were vying for the part, Pratt got his chance eventually and ended up blowing away the competition. Gunn was so taken with Pratt’s unique talents that he was even willing to look past the actor’s doughy physique, (“[I]f that means we have the world’s first overweight superhero, I’m okay with it”). Pratt ended up getting in great shape, so we’re left to wonder what a pudgier Star-Lord might have looked like.
Would “Guardians of the Galaxy” have been such a huge hit with a less charismatic actor in the lead role? If James Gunn hadn’t begrudgingly seen Chris Pratt for the role, would either of them be among the biggest Hollywood success stories of 2014?
